In a world sodden with images, opinions and noise, Cape Town–based artist Tanja Truscott is asking something quieter of us: to look, to pause…and to feel. Running at Sisonke Gallery from 03 March to 31 May 2026, ‘Without Words’ is her new solo exhibition of abstract drawings on paper, presented by House Union Block (HUB). Truscott was a Nando’s Creative Exchange (NCX) participant in 2024 and the exhibition extends the support and momentum fostered through the programme, which is facilitated by HUB. The show offers a considered counterpoint to the speed and noise of contemporary visual culture, inviting viewers to spend time with work that resists explanation and rewards stillness. Rather than drawing with pencil, Truscott uses oil paint on carefully prepared paper, allowing the linework to take centre stage. Some drawings hold faint traces of real-world references (a garden, a figure, a place), while others emerge without any external reference at all. In these works, line becomes an expression of feeling rather than depiction. ‘The title “Without Words” reflects how I hope the exhibition is experienced,’ says Truscott. ‘It doesn’t ask the viewer to understand or decode anything. It simply invites them to be open to what they see [...]

With some governments rolling back climate protections at an alarming pace, the question of how human choices affect the planet has never felt more critical. Against this global backdrop, celebrated Congolese-born South African-based artist Many Libuta presents a timely new solo exhibition, The Red Apple. Libuta describes the show as a visual meditation on temptation and environmental consequence. It draws on the biblical story of Adam and Eve – not to moralise but to reframe the ancient metaphor in light of modern ecological collapse. The recurring motif of the suspended red apple becomes a silent question hanging before each viewer: what temptations do we resist or surrender to in our daily environmental choices? ‘Humanity exists not separate from nature but as an integrated, dependent extension of it,’ Libuta says. ‘When we destroy nature, we destroy ourselves.’ This is the artist’s second major solo exhibition in Cape Town, following his acclaimed 2022 show Women and Nature, at AVA Gallery in Cape Town, which focused on the vital role women play in environmental stewardship. While the previous body of work featured celestial skies and feminine subjects, The Red Apple takes a more grounded and urgent tone. Libuta curated the exhibition himself, selecting [...]

3 April to 4 June 2025 How does a jolt of neon pink against muted greens affect your emotional state? What sensations arise when metallic gold weaves through layers of electric blue? These are the questions Cape Town-based artist Debbie Field invites viewers to consider in her latest exhibition, Is it ok to use neons? The psychology of colour has long examined how different hues influence human behaviour, emotions and perceptions. Field builds on this rich tradition, pushing boundaries with contemporary pigments. From layers of vibrant neons and fluorescents emerges an immersive exploration of pigment and texture, as colours play across the surfaces of canvas, board and paper deliberately chosen to evoke immediate emotional responses before inviting intellectual analysis. Selected for the Nando’s Creative Exchange 2025, Field has run practical art workshops for UCT Summer School and ceramic studios across South Africa. Her approach embodies Virginia Woolf’s sentiment ‘I am in the mood to dissolve in the sky’, creating works where the boundaries between observer and artwork blur, leaving only the pure experience of colour itself. About the artist Debbie Field Debbie Field explores the intersection of colour and emotion in abstract pieces that challenge traditional perceptions. She has run [...]

The evidence of the unknown II, 2023. Acrylic ink, metallic acrylic paint and cooking oil on canvas Exploring the delicate balance between individuality and unity, Mpho Machate’s abstract works represent a striking fusion of form, colour, and texture, intricately woven with profound symbolism. His creations invite viewers to contemplate these dualities, resulting in a dynamic and thought-provoking visual experience. The upcoming exhibition, Individuation of the Whole, will run from 7 November 2024 to 26 January 2025 at Sisonke Gallery, which is located within the Cape Heritage Hotel on Bree Street in Cape Town. Each piece in Machate’s exhibition is unique, blending inks, oils, and stencils. His works reflect keen observations of textured surfaces found in nature, but also observed patterns created by cracked walls and floors. Fine lines evoke imagery of roads and boundaries, while bold colour contrasts combine to form an unexpected yet harmonious visual experience. Music plays a crucial role in Machate’s artistic process, with the melodies and rhythms of jazz providing an environment conducive to sharp focus and creative expression. Just as each instrumentalist contributes to a musical composition, the individual elements of Machate’s paintings work together to create a powerful collective impact. The exhibition encourages viewers [...]

Look at the Sun_Sandile Mhlongo Experience the contrasts of Cape Town through Sandile Ashar Mhlongo’s evocative acrylic paintings. Lights in Darkness, Darkness in Light is exhibited by House Union Block (HUB) at the Cape Heritage Hotel’s Sisonke Gallery until 27 October 2024. HUB is a nonprofit organisation connecting South African artists to commercial opportunities under the umbrella of Spier Arts Trust. Operating out of the trust’s Union House building in Commercial Street, Cape Town, HUB consists of a gallery space and a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to curating local and international exhibitions to create career-boosting visibility and an opportunity to sell for South African fine artists, such as Mhlongo. A second-generation artist born in Gugulethu and living in Mitchell’s Plain’s Lost City, Mhlongo’s art career began during his high school years in the late 1980s. Learning from his father – an artist working as a bricklayer – he is passionate about making his family’s lived experiences visible through his work. His visually striking depictions of everyday life have a strong sense of place infused with a touch of surreality. Painting visual metaphors, Mhlongo’s latest collection embodies the principle of choosing to look at light, even in times of darkness. His work [...]

An object made with skill, craftsmanship and deep intent forever reflects a moment in history. This is what mixed media artist Tamlin Blake showcases in her latest exhibition, After the Fire, at the Sisonke Gallery at The Cape Heritage Hotel, from 7 March 2024 to 28 April 2024. A devastating fire decimated a large portion of a private home in the winelands in 2020 and extensively damaged a well-loved art collection housed there. This affected Blake deeply because many of the artworks were by artist friends or artists she deeply admired. In some cases, all that was left of paintings on the walls were the metal hanging fixtures and stains where the oil paint had melted to the floor. After the fire, dozens of old fine China remnants were found among the debris which Blake salvaged for this significant exhibition. The artworks created from the shards grew into echoes of the objects they had once been. In their new form, they remind us not only of the impermanence of precious things but of the importance of appreciating thoughtfully made objects, and their meaning and significance in the moments given to us. The major themes of Blake’s work revolve around what [...]
