Chosen from a shortlist of 26 designers, four young creatives have been announced as the winners of the first Clout Designers’ Industry Days Fired Up By Nando’s. These rising talents have shown the necessary potential for inclusion in the Nando’s Portal to Africa and are set to receive year-long mentorship from the Nando’s Design Programme and a complimentary exhibition stand at 100% Design South Africa 2020, Africa’s leading design trade show. The Clout Designers’ Industry Days Fired Up By Nando’s took place on 9 and 10 August 2019 at 100% Design South Africa 2019, which ran alongside Decorex Joburg at the Gallagher Convention Centre from 7-11 August 2019. There were 26 pitch presentations over the two days. These sessions were the culmination of a nationwide call for entry that closed on 31 July 2019. South African designers were invited to pitch concepts and prototypes in the hope of having these new designs selected for inclusion in Nando’s online catalogue and purchasing platform – the Portal to Africa – and ultimately, commissioned for the interiors of Nando’s restaurants around the world.Glorinah Mabaso of LED Interiors, Rene Forbay of RF Designs, Siyanda Mbele of Pinda, and Khosi Leteba caught the judges’ attention [...]

This year’s 100% Design South Africa pavilion at Decorex Cape Town, which showed from 1-5 May 2019 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), was aptly entitled 100% Extraordinary. It served as a tantalising, small-scale preview for the showcase of design excellence that’s to come when the main event opens in Hall 1 at Decorex Joburg at Gallagher Convention Centre in August 2019. 100% Extraordinary was a highly curated display of artisanal designer products and pieces, brought together to express a next-generation idea of what workspaces can be. The selection, curated by the Creative Director of 100% Design South Africa, Cathy O’Clery, featured a variety of leading local brands, many of which showcased all-new products. Under the theme Botanical Office, 100% Extraordinary explored the concept of an office space that offers an antidote to the norm. ‘The botanical theme was a no-brainer for me,’ says O’Clery, ‘People have an intrinsic need to connect with nature and so it’s a logical step to bring elements of this into the workplace.’ In line with the current thinking that office spaces need to be practical and hardwearing without being hard-lined or sterile, the Botanical Office theme showcased brands that brought a tactile [...]

Lovers of renowned gifting and homeware label Carrol Boyes will know that over the years the brand has come to encompass far more than the distinctive tableware for which it first became so highly revered. As a designer and artist Carrol Boyes’ creative vision expanded, and as her work became more and more widely known, so too did her ever-growing repertoire of designer pieces. Today, the Carrol Boyes range spans over 1000 pieces of handcrafted functional art. The range includes not only the aforementioned cutlery in pewter and stainless steel, but also porcelain crockery, glassware, furniture accessories such as scatter cushions, and even, leather handbags and jewellery. Yet another welcome addition to the Carrol Boyes family has been the introduction of Carrol Boyes Wines, a natural extension of the Carrol Boyes way of life. Carrol Boyes Wines offers an award-winning collection of fine wines that bear bespoke Carrol Boyes labelling. The wines embody the Carrol Boyes lifestyle and are created jointly by the renowned South African designer, and her brother, John Boyes, together with his business partner, Neels Barnardt, both of Barnardt Boyes. In the same way, as Carrol designs and manufactures distinctive functional art pieces for the home, so Barnardt [...]

Leaders of South African design were honoured on Saturday, 25 November at the fifth annual Design Foundation Awards, in a ceremony held in Cape Town. The seven awards, lauding the industry’s top achievers in design, manufacture, commercial success and innovation, were sponsored by various forward-thinking local companies, as a new wave of supporters joins the celebration of South African talent. The 2017 awards signal a fresh approach by the Design Foundation, formerly known as the Southern Guild Design Foundation. Says board member Trevyn McGowan, ‘With our independent think-tank board representing diverse industries, our aim is to have a foundation that supports the design industry at large – from grassroots and educational levels to manufacture, retail and export. Our partners are seeing the value in supporting local design and growing this multi-layered industry together, as we move it away from its association with a collectible design gallery to be run as an autonomous non-profit foundation.’ Abigail Rands, Marketing Director of Krone, sponsor of the prestigious Icon Award, won by Gregor Jenkin, says: ‘Design is at the heart of the way we live and work. We believe it has the ability to change South Africa, and by supporting local design we’re investing [...]

Nurturing future stars and growing the design industry lies at the heart of the ethos behind 100% Design South Africa, which takes place from 6 to 10 August 2015 at Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, alongside Decorex Joburg. South Africa’s only international design show, 100% Design South Africa, in conjunction with headline sponsor Dauphin HumanDesign® Group, promises to enthrall visitors with its superbly curated displays and a lineup that comprises top global design brands alongside local design stars. In addition to the established South African names and international design luminaries participating at this leading design show, some of the country’s brightest young talents are given a platform to showcase their work. Each year the curators, Creative Director Laurence Brick and Programme Director Cathy O’Clery, choose a designer whom they see as a future design leader. Last year it was Cape Town-based surface designer and artist Atang Tshikare, a self-developed multidisciplinary artist whose work combines line drawing and street art, working across mediums from pencil and marker to acrylic and aerosol. This year’s featured designer is Renée Rossouw, a recently graduated architect who is already making an impact on the design scene with her bold, colourful graphic patterns applied to a [...]
