Hot off the press! Clout / A heartfelt celebration of South African design is a gorgeously curated design compendium sharing the collaboration between Nando’s design programme, Clout, and established and emerging creatives. South African design is thriving as never before – in part due to the support of Nando’s notable design programme, Clout, which showcases a host of creatives on its various platforms. The global restaurant giant is one of the biggest exporters of local design – its support for the industry extends to its Hot Young Designer competition, the print magazine Clout, and the online catalogue and purchasing platform Portal to Africa, which has facilitated more than R34m worth of design sales to date. In July last year, it spearheaded Nando’s Business Development Support Initiative to support design businesses. “As a business in South Africa, we are mindful of the need to create employment opportunities for young people as well as offer ongoing hands-on support to SMEs,” says Michael Spinks, Nando’s property and development director. “We are proud to boost the design sector by facilitating exposure to global opportunities.” To enhance its print oeuvre, Clout has brought out a gorgeously curated design compendium of the work and big [...]

With large-scale public artworks located anywhere from Azerbaijan to Brighton, the internationally recognised and locally celebrated street artist, r1. is set to be 100% Design South Africa’s first-ever Feature Artist of the Year for 2019. This Johannesburg-based visionary is known for striking and vibrant artworks that are showcased in and around a city’s built environment. He refers to his pieces as ‘urban interventions’ that generate dialogue and serve as a means of engagement with the general public. r1. uses a combination of found materials and repurposed objects to create interactive art pieces that change the city’s streets. His work embraces a dynamic sense of geometry and the unexpected use of reclaimed wood, street signs, barrier tape and other unusual materials. These astonishing pieces grace the corners of buildings, fences, abandoned buildings, high-rise walls… anywhere, really. He honed his signature style on the streets of London and Brighton, first catching the attention of the publilc around 2011. Having left his mark on the UK landscape, he returned to Johannesburg to pave a new pathway of opportunity, envisioning the City of Gold as a fresh canvas. Since his return to South Africa he has created a repertoire of temporary works and third [...]

The show holds innovation and a desire to constantly strive for newness at its core, so each year the creative director duo of Cathy O’Clery and Laurence Brick drives exciting product launches and catalyses engaging spaces from the designers invited to take part in these dynamic features. This year is no exception. With a roster that’s arguably stronger than ever and that demonstrates the sheer wealth of talent there is in this country, the 100% Design South Africa features will prove a worthy showcase for the various creatives at their helm. We’d like to introduce the star lineup for 2019: Feature Designer: Laduma Ngxokolo Multi-disciplinary talent Laduma Ngxokolo of Maxhosa comes on board as 2019’s Feature Designer of the Year. Known for his dynamic and contemporary interpretation of traditional motifs, he’s put local talent on the world stage and reoriented an African aesthetic in a new light.
This year’s 100% Design South Africa pavilion at Decorex Cape Town, which showed from 1-5 May 2019 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), was aptly entitled 100% Extraordinary. It served as a tantalising, small-scale preview for the showcase of design excellence that’s to come when the main event opens in Hall 1 at Decorex Joburg at Gallagher Convention Centre in August 2019. 100% Extraordinary was a highly curated display of artisanal designer products and pieces, brought together to express a next-generation idea of what workspaces can be. The selection, curated by the Creative Director of 100% Design South Africa, Cathy O’Clery, featured a variety of leading local brands, many of which showcased all-new products. Under the theme Botanical Office, 100% Extraordinary explored the concept of an office space that offers an antidote to the norm. ‘The botanical theme was a no-brainer for me,’ says O’Clery, ‘People have an intrinsic need to connect with nature and so it’s a logical step to bring elements of this into the workplace.’ In line with the current thinking that office spaces need to be practical and hardwearing without being hard-lined or sterile, the Botanical Office theme showcased brands that brought a tactile [...]

South Africa’s most supportive art and design competition, the PPC Imaginarium Awards, will exhibit the work of its Western Cape Winners and Finalists at the Association for Visual Arts (AVA) Gallery in Cape Town from 6-26 June 2019. The exhibition will open from 18h00 on Thursday the 6th of June and will form part of the popular First Thursdays circuit in the inner city. Visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to engage with the diverse range of art and design works from the competition’s various entry categories, namely, Fashion, Sculpture, Industrial Design, Jewellery, Film and Architecture. Entries into the PPC Imaginarium Awards must aim to express innovation through the medium of concrete. Although there were no Film or Architecture Finalists from the Western Cape, on the whole, the region fared well in the competition, with 14 out of 67 national Finalists hailing from the Cape, from which four Winners were selected. Notably, Cheryl Traub Adler received the runner-up award in the Fashion category for a conceptual garment titled My Mother’s Dress; Joani Groenewald was the runner-up in the Jewellery category for a ring called Keree 3; Jon-Peer Bouwer was the runner-up in the Industrial Design category for his Lime Light [...]

The 2019 installment of 100% Design South Africa is set to take place from 7 to 11 August 2019, alongside Decorex Joburg at the Gallagher Convention Centre. A sterling line-up of rising talent will be showcased alongside established industry stalwarts. The show features the darlings of the local design world, with designer Laduma Ngxokolo of MaXhosa headlining this year’s lineup as Feature Designer for 2019. ‘We invited Laduma to take part as this year’s Feature Designer for a number of reasons. His strong crossover capability from fashion to home makes him incredibly versatile. And his designs draw on personal heritage and a sense of culture, which we feel is an important narrative to champion,’ says Laurence Brick, creative director of Platform Creative, curators of 100% Design South Africa. ‘Additionally, he has an ability to intepret tradition in a very contemporary way, which makes him really exciting as a designer.’ The much-lauded multifaceted designer has branched out from the iconic graphic garments that have cemented him as a star on the local fashion scene, into equally dynamic homeware. For 100% Design South Africa 2019, he will be presenting his collection of rugs, cushion and throws, as well as his new trade [...]
