Klein Amoskuil Farm situated in the Swartland has been home to Spice Route Winery since 1997. Upon arrival all those years ago, Charles Back stumbled across the country’s oldest Sauvignon Blanc bush vines, which were surprisingly able to withstand the extremely dry conditions of the area. The Amos Block is made from these vines, which are harvested from mid to late January each year. It is fermented without any additives in old French barrels, and lightly fortified, after which a flor yeast culture is added and the wine is left to age in the Swartland heat. The primary bottling is a solera of three vintages, from 2014, 2015 and 2016. The result is a youthful, pale and dry fortified sherry-style wine, with aromatic hints of apples, almonds and walnuts. Amos Block is fresh and fully flavoured with a lingering finish. It is best suited to accompany a diverse selection of tapas-style food and must be consumed within a [...]

Inspired by the rich and bold flavours of the world’s most precious spice, Spice Route Wines is proud to launch its maiden rosé, the Saffron Rosé. As the sun rises above fields of violet-blue flowers, specialised pickers begin the harvesting of the sought-after Saffron spice. One by one, each of the three ochre stigmas is pulled out of the delicate flower and dried by hand – a lengthy process that makes Saffron cost almost as much as gold. Much like this exotic hand-harvested spice, the grape selection for the Spice Route Wines Saffron Rosé is equally as rigorous. The low-yielding bush vines, which are grown in unique vineyards in Darling and the Piekenierskloof, ensure that only unblemished bunches undergo light pressing, releasing sensual floral and honey-like aromas into this serious rosé. “The Saffron Rosé is made in a more complex style that will benefit from some ageing,” says Spice Route Wines winemaker, Charl du Plessis. The wine comprises 100% Grenache grape variety and is gently sorted and pressed by hand to extract the pink colour. The individual components are fermented in an old 500-litre French oak barrel to ensure that each bottle contains only the highest quality of Spice Route [...]

Spice Route Wines has once again performed exceptionally well at the National Wine Challenge awards, with five of its wines receiving top honours. The premier event, now in its seventh successful year, was held on 26 April 2017 in Cape Town and played host to some of South Africa’s leading fine wines. The National Wine Challenge pays homage to South Africa’s Top 100 wines each year and scores them across its stellar categories. Each wine is objectively and independently assessed ensuring great care and professional diligence. Independent auditors are enlisted to review the results and validate the selection process. Spice Route dominated the Double Platinum/Top 100 category, with its Amos Block Perpetual Reserve NV, Saffron Rosé 2016 and Terra de Bron Grenache 2015 each receiving an award. The Grand Cru National ‘Best in Class’ award went to both the spectacular Amos Block Perpetual Reserve NV and exotic Saffron Rosé 2016. Two of Spice Route’s most popular flagship wines, the Malabar 2013 and Chakalaka 2014, were awarded Double Gold. This fine selection of wines is available at the Spice Route Tasting Room located at Spice Route Destination in Paarl.
Spice Route Winery released its much-anticipated flagship red blend, The Malabar 2012! Like the fellow Spice Route wines, The Malabar 2012 exemplifies the new age of the Swartland, and the farm Klein Amoskuil, where the grapes are grown and produced. The wine is the 8th Malabar edition in the Spice Route wine range since 2002. Malabar is a blend of scrupulously sorted vineyards, including Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan and Petit Sirah. The elegant wine has a well-integrated palate, opulent tannin structure and balanced mouth feel, giving it the potential to age another decade. “A wine that truly reflects the excellence of Swartland,” describes Head Winemaker, Charl Du Plessis. Layered and perfumed aromas of rich blackberry, plum, cacao and violets captivate the senses. The wine is delicious when served with slow roasted lamb, green beans and roast potatoes. Each grape was carefully hand-selected and after fermentation the wine spent 12 months in French oak barrels before it matured in the bottle for another two years. As 2012 had a very low yield, a mere 2.6 tons of grapes per hectare were harvested. For a wine that took about four years to produce, the Malabar 2012 is most definitely an [...]
