Spier Wine Farm received nine Double Gold medals and seven Gold medals at the 29th annual Veritas Wine Awards gala dinner in Cape Town. Known as the South Africa’s most trusted competition, Spier’s golden results is the most ever awarded to a wine producer since the prestigious competition began in 1991. Seven of Spier’s nine Double Gold winners were white wines: Spier Brut Methodé Cap Classique 2009, two Chenin Blancs (Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2018 and Spier Ideology Chenin Blanc 2019), two Sauvignon Blancs (Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc 2019 and Spier Ideology Sauvignon Blanc 2019), and both the 2013 and 2019 vintages of Spier Creative Block 2 (a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon). The two red wine winners were the Spier 21 Gables Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 and Spier Creative Block 3 2016 (a blend of Shiraz, Mourvèdre and Viognier). “We are absolutely delighted with these results as they recognise our team’s passionate commitment to crafting quality wines,” says Spier Cellar Master Frans Smit. “The success of our white wines in particular – across varietals and, indeed, vintages – shows a depth, versatility and consistency that we’ve worked really hard to achieve.” Veritast Overall Best Performer – Spier [...]

Raise a chilled glass of the season’s hottest varietal With the days still long and the mercury still soaring, it’s little wonder that Spier Executive Chef Lolli Heyns’s go-to varietal is Chenin Blanc. “Chenin is a refreshing varietal that can be made in completely different styles – and it goes really well with summer foods,” she explains as she welcomes us into the kitchen of Eight, the farm-to-table restaurant at Spier that she helms. “We use fresh produce organically grown in our food garden to really showcase the seasons at Spier – and this means we often match Chenin with our farm-style dishes at this time of year.” “Chenin has a beautiful flavour profile: it’s mouth-watering – the glands in your mouth literally start watering. Very few other varietals have that effect,” adds Spier Cellar Master Frans Smit. Heyns particularly favours the Spier Signature Chenin Blanc, which is fresh and fruity in style, for its tropical aromas. It’s an ideal match for lighter dishes such as a courgette soufflé with gruyere. “The crispness of the wine cuts through the earthiness of the goat cheese and you are left with something spectacular – a perfect balancing of crisp flavours and richness,” [...]

On 6 October, Spier’s 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2015 won the inaugural Veritas Vertex Award at this year’s Veritas Awards, defeating 1638 other entries to be crowned the competition’s overall champion wine. This adds to the winery’s remarkable achievement of taking home six Double Gold and nine Gold medals from the prestigious awards. The Veritas Vertex Award takes its name from the Latin word “vertex” – meaning “highest point” – alluding to the pinnacle of achievement that the award represents. A specially-designed handmade glass trophy was presented to Spier cellar master Frans Smit and his team at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Paying tribute to Spier’s winemaking heritage, the 21 Gables Chenin Blanc is a wine of outstanding pedigree. The 2015 vintage was recognised as one of South Africa’s best Chenin Blancs through its inclusion in the 2016 Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge, and recently scored 95 points in Tim Atkin’s Annual South African 2017 Special report. Spier’s other Double Gold winners were the Ideology Chenin Blanc 2016, Signature Chenin Blanc 2017, Spier 21 Gables Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 and Creative Block 3 2012. “The fact that four of Spier’s six Double Golds were awarded to Chenin Blanc wines [...]

The International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2017 awarded the Spier 21 Gables Pinotage 2014 with a “Gold Outstanding” medal score of 93+ at the 48th annual IWSC awards ceremony, which was held in London in September 2017. In addition, Spier proudly walked away with awards for seven other wines in the 2017 IWSC. Spier’s wines were judged against those from nearly 90 countries, with more than 400 international experts evaluating the wines over a period of seven months, making Spier’s achievement in the IWSC extremely significant. The Spier 21 Gables Pinotage 2014 is richly textured, tannic and brooding, its palate exuding black fruits, dark chocolate, baked herbs and meaty spice. Tautly strung yet fine tannins are evident, offering a luxurious and velvety texture. Expect this wine to peak around 2022 with the ability to keep longer. The Spier 21 Gables Pinotage 2014 also won Double Gold at the 2017 Top 100 SA Wines, Double Gold at the 2016 Veritas Awards and earned 4.5 stars in the 2017 edition of Platter’s Wine Guide. Again on the international front, renowned journalist and Master of Wine, Tim Atkin, has released his much-anticipated fifth annual South African 2017 Special Report, and has rated [...]
