A new group exhibition at Cape Town’s HUB Gallery challenges the culture of artistic individualism and asks what becomes possible when artists create in dialogue, rather than in isolation. HUB Gallery is pleased to present Delete Nton’ntoni, a new group exhibition by four contemporary artists, Tafadzwa Tega, Lwando Dlamini, Knowledge Marongedza and Luyanda Mkhuthungu and curated by Tafadzwa Tega, taking place from 6 August to 26 October. Delete Nton’ntoni is a deliberate interruption of the creative isolation that has increasingly characterised Cape Town’s contemporary art scene. The exhibition takes its name from two distinct sources. Nton’ntoni is an isiXhosa term meaning ‘and so forth’ or ‘something like that’, a phrase that speaks to habitual repetition, to the default mode of doing things without questioning. The second reference is the digital command Ctrl+Z, which serves as a symbol for deleting, rethinking and reimagining the systems and habits that no longer serve. Together, the title frames the exhibition’s central proposition: that the growing culture of individualism among Black African artists in Cape Town, while powerful in its own right, has also produced creative silos. Delete Nton’ntoni proposes a reset. A return to dialogue, shared presence, and collective creative practice that claps back [...]

With some governments rolling back climate protections at an alarming pace, the question of how human choices affect the planet has never felt more critical. Against this global backdrop, celebrated Congolese-born South African-based artist Many Libuta presents a timely new solo exhibition, The Red Apple. Libuta describes the show as a visual meditation on temptation and environmental consequence. It draws on the biblical story of Adam and Eve – not to moralise but to reframe the ancient metaphor in light of modern ecological collapse. The recurring motif of the suspended red apple becomes a silent question hanging before each viewer: what temptations do we resist or surrender to in our daily environmental choices? ‘Humanity exists not separate from nature but as an integrated, dependent extension of it,’ Libuta says. ‘When we destroy nature, we destroy ourselves.’ This is the artist’s second major solo exhibition in Cape Town, following his acclaimed 2022 show Women and Nature, at AVA Gallery in Cape Town, which focused on the vital role women play in environmental stewardship. While the previous body of work featured celestial skies and feminine subjects, The Red Apple takes a more grounded and urgent tone. Libuta curated the exhibition himself, selecting [...]

South African talent often receives international recognition before being celebrated locally. Not so with Alchemy, the collaborative collection curated by Spier Arts Trust (SAT), which will be displayed at HUB Gallery until 25 October 2024. The exhibition serves as a precursor to SAT’s Nando’s-sponsored showcase at the 2024 edition of 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London from 10 to 13 October 2024, which will display works that were specifically produced in a collaborative way. Echoing the aspirations of SAT’s selected 1-54 collection that will be travelling to London, the process of collaboration and the melding of ideas is an integral part of Alchemy. Cape Town’s HUB Gallery show features more than 20 professional artists who have collaborated with highly skilled artisans from HUB Mosaic Studio, Qaqambile Bead Studio and the Keiskamma Art Project, to bring their concepts to life in a co-created fashion. HUB Mosaic Studio continues the ambition of Spier Arts Academy, an educational platform that equipped apprentices with practical and business skills to boost their commercial viability. The studio focuses on creating collaborative opportunities between fine artists and skilled mosaic artisans. Qaqambile Bead Studio is a beading studio which [...]

A new edition of an annual ceramics exhibition, which opens at Spier on 3 June 2024, is an exploration of time, texture and memory – both the personal and the collective. Many will be familiar with the artwork by surrealist painter Salvador Dali from 1931, which features melting, warped clocks draped across an open expanse of land. The new ceramics exhibition shares its title with this piece, ‘The Persistence of Memory’ (La persistència de la memòria), and contrasts hardness and softness, functionality and aesthetics – while flirting with the relativity of space, time and memory. “When working with clay, we come to understand that the clay itself holds memories,” says Tamlin Blake, Chief Curator at Spier Arts Trust. “If there is a dent somewhere in the clay body, particularly with porcelain, it will manifest when it comes out of the kiln. Moon Jar Encrusted (2023) by Ralph JohnsonStoneware “Most of the featured artists deal with memory in their works, whether conceptually as a means of healing past hurts or physically acting as cultural recordings of historic patterns and traditional techniques,” adds Blake, who is herself a trained ceramic artist. With more than 50 pieces from artists working across South [...]

An object made with skill, craftsmanship and deep intent forever reflects a moment in history. This is what mixed media artist Tamlin Blake showcases in her latest exhibition, After the Fire, at the Sisonke Gallery at The Cape Heritage Hotel, from 7 March 2024 to 28 April 2024. A devastating fire decimated a large portion of a private home in the winelands in 2020 and extensively damaged a well-loved art collection housed there. This affected Blake deeply because many of the artworks were by artist friends or artists she deeply admired. In some cases, all that was left of paintings on the walls were the metal hanging fixtures and stains where the oil paint had melted to the floor. After the fire, dozens of old fine China remnants were found among the debris which Blake salvaged for this significant exhibition. The artworks created from the shards grew into echoes of the objects they had once been. In their new form, they remind us not only of the impermanence of precious things but of the importance of appreciating thoughtfully made objects, and their meaning and significance in the moments given to us. The major themes of Blake’s work revolve around what [...]

The Keiskamma Art Project from Hamburg in the Eastern Cape is not just about art. Of course, that’s a big part of it. But it’s also about building community, sharing knowledge, empowering women, educating youth, and celebrating the local culture and stories through textiles, beadwork and wirework. “The values connecting art and people are precisely what Spier holds dear,” says Tamlin Blake, Chief Curator at Spier Arts Trust. “Spier Arts Trust is proud to present the upcoming exhibition at the farm, titled In Search of the Birds of the Sea. It’s a genuine collaboration between fine artists and embroiderers to co-create unique embroidered tapestries.” Henk Serfontein. Handskrif handwriting. For more than 20 years, the Keiskamma Art Project has been the mouthpiece of the communities living alongside the Keiskamma River, providing dignity, inspiration and income. The embroidered artworks have toured the country and beyond, winning praise and awards across the world. The new collaboration between Spier Arts and Keiskamma Art Project began when Blake, who is also a mixed media artist, visited Keiskamma to work with embroiderers to produce an embroidered tapestry. Laying the foundations of what has become a valuable artistic partnership, Spier Arts Trust has since arranged for other [...]

Like moments frozen in time, Hanneke Benadé’s larger-than-life pastel drawings are exquisitely detailed glimpses into her subject matter. In her latest solo exhibition, Sense of Place, the accomplished South African artist explores the connection between subject and landscape at the House Union Block gallery in the heart of Cape Town. With pastels as her medium of choice, Benadé creates evocative works that are rooted in realism. In the past, her lifelike drawings have been character studies, capturing the emotions of her models through portraiture. However, in this solo show, she explores the connection between the subject and the landscape in what she describes as ‘an interplay of emotions, memories and experiences that shape our sense of place’. This situational collection holds significance for Benadé as an artist, as it embodies the relationship between ourselves and the natural world, and how our environment influences our identity, perspective and sense of belonging: ‘It embodies the connection we have with the environments we inhabit, whether physical or emotional, and the ways in which these landscapes shape our understanding of self,’ writes the artist. Featuring a total of five larger pieces and twenty smaller works, Sense of Place expands on Benadé’s normal subject matter [...]

The zumbani flower – the bloom of the ‘wonder herb’ fevertea tree, Lippia javanica – is an important totem in the works of Zimbabwean artist Tafadzwa Tega, whose bold and colourful paintings, often coupled with intricate floral backgrounds inspired by the flower, delve into topics such as cultural identity, faith and customs, and the impact of migration and displacement. His brightly coloured portraits certainly stood out the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London in October last year, garnering positive responses from international art lovers and critics alike.
Contemporary artist Diane Victor has been at the forefront of the South African and international art scene for many years. Now an exhibition of her work, coinciding with her new book launch, presented by Spier Arts Trust, will run at the Old Wine Cellar at Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch from 18 February to 18 April 2023. Victor explores the dark side of South African society with subtlety and complexity. From corruption and the social inequalities that affect the country, to the condition of humans and more specifically women, she implicitly questions the vulnerability of life. Her graphic works, almost exclusively in black and white, are woven through with references to the history of art and mythology. They reveal her extraordinary mastery of printmaking and drawing techniques and her constant exploration of new media, such as ash and candle soot. A biographical volume, produced by French publishers Mare et Martin, will be launched at the exhibition. Through a large selection of prints, drawings and smoke drawings, the book covers forty years of the virtuoso’s politically engaged career and provides a stylistic analysis of her work. The exhibition is open to the public and entrance is free. Diary details: Date: 18 [...]
