Spier Light Art is set to illuminate the Stellenbosch wine farm for the seventh time next year, running from 21 March to 21 April 2025. Every year the choice of artworks reinforces just how innovative, bold and experimental South African artists are. Playful, provocative, reflective and engaging – each iteration of the event encourages viewers to contemplate what it means to live in this intriguing, diverse, complicated and hopeful nation on the southern tip of Africa. Artists and designers (professionals, students, and institutions) are invited to submit expressions of interest for light art works and video art that engage all age groups. Light should be a central element and experiment and innovation are encouraged. The project will completely or partially fund installations chosen by the selection committee, headed by curators Jay Pather and Vaughn Sadie. The selection is not confined to a theme, but artists may be prompted by the ethereal and the whimsical, artworks that speak to technology, issues affecting South Africa, resilience, enchantment and exuberance, and the working wine farm. Categories of work may include: Site-specific work (designed to be displayed in particular places on Spier Wine Farm) Sculptural, object-based work Interactive art Digital works that foreground technology [...]

Exploring various themes, Spier Light Art delves into the ethereal and the whimsical, the political landscape, humanity’s changing relationship with technology, tenacity in the face of adversity, and Spier’s unique history. Here we take a look at some of the installations featured in Spier Light Art 2023: Orpheus by Georgia Munnik In the Greek tragedy, Orpheus loses his dead wife Eurydice a second time as he fails to fulfil the condition of bringing her back to life: not to look back at her as she crosses the threshold from dead to living. The artwork’s title, ‘Orpheus’, refers to the colonisation of Stellenbosch and the incessant gaze of historically white wine farmers looking at the soil as a resource. ‘Orpheus’ is a glass neon light sculpture derived from a digital rendering of a font that the artist developed from the Australian parasite plant, dodder. The parasite plant cannot photosynthesise; instead, it extracts nutrients from host plants through suctioning tendrils. Dodder’s ‘long strings of cursive writing’ inscribes its tendrils on host plants, strangling them while calling things into being – one cannot invoke without naming and the parasite font forms words to call to them.
Spier is proud to announce the third edition of Spier Light Art, to be exhibited throughout the historic Stellenbosch wine farm from 26 February to 28 March 2021. Designers, architects, light-, sound- and video artists – as well as students and institutions – are invited to submit expressions of interest for projects and video-based artworks that are engaging to all age groups. COVID-19 has made both the present and future far more uncertain and unpredictable than before; toppling long-held assumptions and radically altering routines and rhythms. How do artists help us to make sense of what we are experiencing? More specifically, how do light artists envision works that illuminate the present moment and help us to imagine where we might be headed next? How can we play and dream? Thematic Directions The whimsical/ethereal: works can reflect a light-hearted engagement with one of multiple sites. The conceptual: works can reflect and integrate more topical conceptual interests that frame our current socio-political landscape as well as COVID-19 directly. Works could also reflect on our shifting relationship to technology and its disruptive influence. There is a specific call for existing video-based artworks produced during lockdown which reflect and integrate more topical conceptual interests [...]
