South Africa’s most underestimated grape has become its greatest global statement For decades, Chenin Blanc was treated as an afterthought. It was the grape you planted for yield, not for legacy – cropped heavily, sent to co-ops, often destined for distillation. Reliable, yes. Respected, no. And yet, today, Chenin Blanc stands as South Africa’s defining varietal, not just locally, but on the global stage. It’s a wine of precision, place and potential. What changed was not the grape. It was the belief in what it could be. At Vinimark, we see this as one of South Africa’s most compelling wine stories. From workhorse to opportunity For much of its history, Chenin Blanc served a functional role in the industry. As Winemaker Anthony Sanvido of DeMorgenzon puts it, it was ‘the workhorse’, often cropped for volume and diverted to distillation. But that same history created an unexpected advantage. Many of South Africa’s most prized Chenin vineyards exist today because they were never replanted – and growers who couldn’t afford to replace them preserved what would become the backbone of the country’s old-vine movement. The real shift came in the 1990s. Winemakers like Ken Forrester began challenging convention by tasting together, sharing [...]

This Heritage Month head out to Spier Wine Farm’s historic Old Wine Cellar for ‘Grounded Practice’ – a landmark ceramics exhibition on until 12 October 2025. Curated by Tamlin Blake, Chief Curator at Spier Arts Trust, the exhibition features 63 ceramic artworks by 42 artists from across South Africa – each one thoughtfully selected to explore themes of stability, sustainability, and self-reflection. ‘Grounded Practice’ offers more than a showcase of beautiful objects, it’s a timely conversation about what it means to feel rooted in a world of change. Rather than dictate a theme from the outset, Blake waited to see what ideas emerged organically from the artists’ submissions. “What came through, almost overwhelmingly, was a sense of instability – personally, politically, environmentally,” she explains. “Many artists were using their practice to find their footing again, to reestablish a sense of balance and belonging. That’s where the title ‘Grounded Practice’ comes from.” The Power of Clay Central to this year’s exhibition is the material itself. “Clay is a potent and enduring material in human civilisation,” Blake explains. “It’s often seen as a metaphor for creativity, malleability, and human potential. But once it’s fired and becomes ceramic, it also represents permanence and [...]

The generously appointed new Spier Spa is a haven of peace and quiet, surrounded by indigenous fynbos gardens that soothe your senses from the moment you step inside its private courtyard, which sits beside a tranquil apothecary garden. This beautifully landscaped, secluded space is complete with its own outdoor plunge pool. The perfect antidote to the everyday stresses of life, the Spier Spa offers a space where you can fully relax and rejuvenate. Set to become the stand-out wellness destination of the Winelands, the Spier Spa is open to both hotel guests and day visitors. It is one of the many notable features of the new Spier Hotel, which opened its doors in early March 2025. Like the hotel itself, the Spa’s offering has been completely reconceptualised, and it was also relocated to embrace a broader vision of wellness. Unique to the Spier Spa is a magnificent Cape Herbal Bath House. A signature experience, the Cape Herbal Bath House is all about detoxification and deep relaxation. You start with a warm exfoliation using fresh snowbush and herbal salt, drawing out toxins and preparing your body for the next step. Then you’re wrapped in a cosy linen blanket and treated to [...]

Become the Master of the Universe at Spier’s new art exhibition showcasing the works of Berco Wilsenach. If ‘Project for the Blind Astronomer’ sounds familiar to you, it may well be because of your visit to Spier Light Art in 2019 and 2024. Rather spectacularly, though, the large-scale panels shown at Light Art makes up only a part of this impressively large body of work. Coming to Spier in October, ‘Extracts from the Blind Astronomer’ features other works from this project, which took Wilsenach five years to complete. Simultaneously playful and provocative, ironic and interactive, this exhibition – like any meaningful artwork – doesn’t take itself too seriously. Nevertheless, Wilsenach’s ideas are of grand proportions and grapple with themes of visual impairment, access to knowledge, the privileged status of certain languages, the complexity and limitations of sensory experience, and inclusivity and exclusivity. ‘Project For The Blind Astronomer’ is an artistic exploration of space, how we map the stars and how our sense of sight enables us to witness the splendour of the universe. Central to the exhibition is ‘Star Atlas’ – a beautifully made book of knowledge that describes the stars; however, it is written exclusively in Braille. Those fluent [...]

The Keiskamma Art Project from Hamburg in the Eastern Cape is not just about art. Of course, that’s a big part of it. But it’s also about building community, sharing knowledge, empowering women, educating youth, and celebrating the local culture and stories through textiles, beadwork and wirework. “The values connecting art and people are precisely what Spier holds dear,” says Tamlin Blake, Chief Curator at Spier Arts Trust. “Spier Arts Trust is proud to present the upcoming exhibition at the farm, titled In Search of the Birds of the Sea. It’s a genuine collaboration between fine artists and embroiderers to co-create unique embroidered tapestries.” Henk Serfontein. Handskrif handwriting. For more than 20 years, the Keiskamma Art Project has been the mouthpiece of the communities living alongside the Keiskamma River, providing dignity, inspiration and income. The embroidered artworks have toured the country and beyond, winning praise and awards across the world. The new collaboration between Spier Arts and Keiskamma Art Project began when Blake, who is also a mixed media artist, visited Keiskamma to work with embroiderers to produce an embroidered tapestry. Laying the foundations of what has become a valuable artistic partnership, Spier Arts Trust has since arranged for other [...]

Contemporary artist Diane Victor has been at the forefront of the South African and international art scene for many years. Now an exhibition of her work, coinciding with her new book launch, presented by Spier Arts Trust, will run at the Old Wine Cellar at Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch from 18 February to 18 April 2023. Victor explores the dark side of South African society with subtlety and complexity. From corruption and the social inequalities that affect the country, to the condition of humans and more specifically women, she implicitly questions the vulnerability of life. Her graphic works, almost exclusively in black and white, are woven through with references to the history of art and mythology. They reveal her extraordinary mastery of printmaking and drawing techniques and her constant exploration of new media, such as ash and candle soot. A biographical volume, produced by French publishers Mare et Martin, will be launched at the exhibition. Through a large selection of prints, drawings and smoke drawings, the book covers forty years of the virtuoso’s politically engaged career and provides a stylistic analysis of her work. The exhibition is open to the public and entrance is free. Diary details: Date: 18 [...]
