On the eve of the lockdown, staff at Spier, the historic Stellenbosch wine farm, prepared boxes of food for 450 vulnerable families in surrounding communities. Just over a week later, these families again received a food box full of nutritious ingredients. The aim of these boxes are to ensure there is nourishment for those who might struggle to access food during their time at home. While these donations will help to keep hunger at bay in the short-term, Spier has recognised that a longer-term solution to address food security in the Stellenbosch area is necessary. In partnership with the Sustainability Institute, 13 members of the local community (predominantly from the Lynedoch area) were recruited to speed up food production at Spier and to learn how to grow their own fresh, nutritious produce at home. “If people learn how to grow their own food, they will never go hungry again,” says Megan McCarthy, who oversees the Spier Food Garden. Over the next three months, she will be providing hands-on training in demonstration plots at Spier. An expert in using eco-friendly techniques to grow food, she is being ably assisted by Lonwabo Mfenguza. Lonwabo is sharing the skills he has gained as [...]

Spier, the historic Stellenbosch wine farm, has won Gold in the Responsible Business category at the 2020 Inspirational Africa Responsible Tourism Awards, it was revealed by WTM Africa in early April. The awards evaluated previous winners in the WTM Africa Responsible Tourism Awards and those for Africa who won Gold in the World Responsible Tourism Awards at WTM London over the last five years (2015-2019) to identify the best of the best. For the Responsible Business category, the judges looked for businesses operating in Africa which have taken responsibility to make tourism better across their business. Spier, which won Gold in the Accommodation for Responsible Employment category in the Africa Awards in 2016, was awarded Gold again at the Inspirational Africa Responsible Tourism Awards in recognition of the farm’s “transparent reporting and the breadth of their approach to improving the employment conditions of their staff”. In particular, the judges recognised Growing for Good, a range of initiatives that Spier supports, empowering communities to make positive social and environmental change. Among the Spier Growing for Good initiatives the judges highlighted are: Learning Spend: each employee receives money to spend on their personal development. The stipend can be spent on anything that [...]

On Monday, 23 March 2020, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the Government would enforce a 21-day nationwide lockdown from midnight on Thursday, 26 March 2020 until Thursday,16 April 2020 in a bid to slow the spread of the Coronavirus and avoid a human catastrophe. While essential food and emergency services will remain in operation at this time, lack of public transport and the impact on the local economy due to business closures will make it more difficult for the vulnerable members of our community to access food items at this time. This situation is exacerbated by the nationwide panic-buying that has ensued ahead of the lockdown, despite the President’s requests to refrain from such purchasing behavior. Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch, Cape Town is taking measures to offer relief to the vulnerable in addition to its existing Growing for Good initiatives. Expressing a sense of solidarity and sensitivity to its context and community are important drivers for Spier, one of the country’s oldest wine farms. Says Spier CEO Andrew Milne: “We recognise that there are many vulnerable families in our immediate community who will struggle to access food items.” In order to address this, Spier partnered with the [...]

Former Spier employee, Merecia Smith, has launched South Africa’s first black-owned wine analysis laboratory. Merecia joined our farm in 1998 as a general worker and first started working in the wine analysis laboratory four years later. Her hard work and passion for accuracy saw her rise through the ranks, from being an assistant to ultimately becoming the lab’s manager in 2018. With Spier’s support, Merecia launched her business, Wine Analytical Services (WASLab) in July 2019. Through financial support, mentoring and purchasing guarantees, Spier has long assisted former employees to develop their own thriving independent micro-enterprises. Other examples include Lingomso Caterers who runs the staff canteen, Mountainview Tank Services, a bluk wine transport service and Primo Vino Packaging and Reworks, which customizes and repackages wine bottles. Developing entrepreneurs forms part of Spier’s Growing for Good initiatives that empower communities to create positive social and environmental change. The science behind the art of winemaking Merecia’s laboratory plays a crucial role in the winemaking process. Through the nearly 20 tests she can do on wine samples, she is able to provide winemakers with vital scientific information (such as levels of acidity, alcohol and sugar). This enables them to make informed decisions on whether [...]
