The Spier Signature Collection, known for its down-to-earth wines perfect for everyday enjoyment, has received a fresh new look. In response to the challenge of modernising the brand while retaining its classic elements, packaging experts at Monday Design have worked closely with the Spier team to craft a contemporary aesthetic. “We wanted to revitalise the Signature Collection to ensure it stands out on shelves,” explains Kathryn Cilliers, Marketing Director at Spier. “However, it was crucial to maintain elements that resonate with our loyal customers. Consumer research played a key role in this process.” The new design made its debut at the ProWein 2024 trade fair in Düsseldorf this March. This exciting update elevates the packaging, all while staying true to the brand’s heritage and commitment to quality. Looking Back, Going Forward The new design, created by the talented team at Monday Design in Cape Town, achieves this balance beautifully. The iconic Spier wordmark remains prominent, ensuring instant brand recognition. “Research revealed that consumers loved our signature wordmark,” says Kathryn. “Keeping it similar was an easy choice.” A striking new addition is the gable head motif at the top of the label. As a proudly South African winery dating back to 1692, Spier’s [...]

Former Spier employee, Merecia Smith, has launched South Africa’s first black-owned wine analysis laboratory. Merecia joined our farm in 1998 as a general worker and first started working in the wine analysis laboratory four years later. Her hard work and passion for accuracy saw her rise through the ranks, from being an assistant to ultimately becoming the lab’s manager in 2018. With Spier’s support, Merecia launched her business, Wine Analytical Services (WASLab) in July 2019. Through financial support, mentoring and purchasing guarantees, Spier has long assisted former employees to develop their own thriving independent micro-enterprises. Other examples include Lingomso Caterers who runs the staff canteen, Mountainview Tank Services, a bluk wine transport service and Primo Vino Packaging and Reworks, which customizes and repackages wine bottles. Developing entrepreneurs forms part of Spier’s Growing for Good initiatives that empower communities to create positive social and environmental change. The science behind the art of winemaking Merecia’s laboratory plays a crucial role in the winemaking process. Through the nearly 20 tests she can do on wine samples, she is able to provide winemakers with vital scientific information (such as levels of acidity, alcohol and sugar). This enables them to make informed decisions on whether [...]

Housed in a graceful gabled Cape Dutch building, the Spier Farm Café is now serving breakfast and lunch served by friendly, attentive staff against the serene backdrop of the rolling lawns and ancient oaks of Spier Wine Farm’s historic Werf (farmyard). The Spier Farm Café’s Chef, Hennie Nel, was previously at Vadas Smokehouse and Bakery where he served as head chef under the restaurant’s founder and acclaimed chef, PJ Vadas. Nel’s extensive cheffing experience includes stints in the kitchens of Open Door (formerly at Constantia Uitsig) and the former Maze by Gordon Ramsay at One & Only Cape Town. Nel is passionate about cooking honest, authentic and unpretentious food made with top quality ingredients. Passionate about the environment, he and his team recycles as much as possible, sending minimal waste to landfill. In keeping with Spier’s sustainability ethos, local and ethical sourcing is also a priority. Farmer Angus McIntosh supplies the Café with meat reared on Spier’s pastures (without hormones or routine antibiotics) as well as eggs laid by happy, outdoor-roaming hens. The Café’s fresh bread and exquisitely flaky croissants are baked a stone’s throw away, at Vadas Smokehouse and Bakery. Simple, seasonal and sublime For breakfast, the star [...]
