As their explorations into sustainable practices, equitable employment, and groundbreaking design unfold, their impact continues to grow. Checking in with seven of 2023’s award winners, there is clear and exciting evidence of their continued momentum in South Africa and around the globe. Join us as we discover where their efforts have taken them this year: Trans-seasonal Design Award presented by COUNTRY ROAD: MUNKUS Following her Twyg Award, Ntuli-Sommie turned heads again in October 2024, participating in the prestigious Jaguar #GiveHerACrown event, a platform designed to spotlight designers championing women’s empowerment through the arts. Her MUNKUS collection for this event is a vibrant celebration of childlike wonder, intricately woven with the rich cultural threads of Ntuli-Sommie’s Zulu heritage. This collection was shown at an event during New York Fashion Week 2024. ‘Participating in this renowned event was a transformative experience for me. It served as a tremendous learning opportunity, enhancing my understanding of the market, introducing me to new designers, and revealing what buyers seek in various regions.
Did you know the global fashion industry consumes more energy than the aviation and shipping industry combined? According to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the production of all clothing people wear contributes to around 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions due to long supply chains and energy-intensive production. ‘There’s no denying the fashion industry has been a major contributor to climate change and biodiversity loss – which means the industry’s sustainability efforts are critical to our planet’s health,’ says hyper-influential global management consultancy McKinsey & Company. With this top of mind and with ongoing climate change, environmental degradation and biodiversity loss, the South African NPC Twyg has been hosting its annual Sustainable Fashion Awards for the last six years. A critical component of this is to open its call for nominations to the public. ‘At Twyg, we want to celebrate fashion that is ecologically, socially and culturally fit for the future. We need to support the leaders, designers and makers involved in ushering in the tomorrow our planet needs,’ says founder Jackie May, who launched Twyg in 2018. ‘Sustainability is not a trend; it’s a fundamental shift in how we think about what we wear, how [...]

Stars of circularity, the ever-so-talented Katherine-Mary Pichulik, Cleo Droomer and Shamyra Moodley are among the line-up of winners at last year’s Twyg Sustainable Fashion Awards who have accomplished some impressive feats since then. Almost a year later, let’s take a look at what these progressive, conscious fashionistas have been up to… ‘The past year has really been about thinking and dreaming into new ways of making, especially within my immediate communities,’ says Cleo Droomer, who has continued his exploration of zero-waste textile pieces. A ‘story-tailor’ and the designer behind Droomer, not only did Cleo win in the Innovative Design and Materials category presented by Polo South Africa in 2022, he was also the winner of Twyg’s Changemaker Award, which last year was sponsored by Country Road. ‘I’ve been exploring new projects and ideas, and I’m excited to be working with key partners who support me and my work to bring these ideas to life,’ he says. Alongside many other recent creative projects, Droomer created a patchwork dress with historical details for Aaniyah Martin, founder of The Beach Co-op, for the One Blue Heart zero-waste gala dinner in Cape Town [...]

For the fifth annual edition of the Twyg Sustainable Fashion Awards, a renowned panel of six local and international judges will bring a strong global perspective to the evaluation process. This will be the second year that this same panel will be judging the awards. “We are confident that this dynamic panel, with wide-ranging and multidisciplinary expertise, will offer a refined outlook that matches the calibre of talented makers, designers, creators, thought-leaders, and innovators who have entered the 2023 awards,” says Twyg founder Jackie May. The jury members for 2023 are Omoyemi Akerele, Mimma Viglezio, Esethu Cenga, Dr Sipho Mbatha, Sharon Armstrong and Nisha Kanabar. Omoyemi Akerele A former magazine editor with multiple degrees in law, Omoyemi Akerele established the fashion business development agency, Style House Files, to create opportunities for African designers by spearheading initiatives that promote the advancement of designers and the evolving ecosystem.
