Worcester is a much unsung destination, yet it has more and more going for it. We invite you to explore its widening range of delights. Your first glimpse of the Western Cape’s very own Worcester (not to be confused with its colonial namesake in the UK) is of a generous, wide-lipped valley closely ringed by mountains with a satisfied little town nestled at its heart. The largest in the Cape interior, Worcester is more than a mini metropole. It is the gateway to an ever-widening range of attractions located a mere 90-minute drive from Cape Town on the N1 towards Johannesburg. Situated in the Breede River catchment area, yet verging on the Karoo, Worcester is rich in history and natural splendour thanks to the many mountain passes and impressive peaks that form the natural borders of the area. If it’s only spectacular scenery and nature you’re after, Worcester would satisfy on this front alone. Scenic destinations such as the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden, which was founded in 1921, beckon. Consisting of 124 hectares of arid and semi-arid terrain at the foot of the Hex River Mountains, this unique garden plays home to a variety of indigenous succulents. In springtime these “vygies” put on a vibrant, colourful explosion of blooms. Courtesy of The South [...]

Haldane Martin was commissioned to design the interior of the new Healey’s Cheesery and Deli in the Western Cape wine region of Somerset West, as a space that offers customers the opportunity to taste cheese and wine together, while experiencing the cheese-making process first-hand. Healey’s Cheesery was envisioned to showcase the award-winning Healey’s Cheddar Cheese – most well-known for its slow-mature Farmhouse Cheddar, amongst the world’s top four cheddars since its launch in 2005. Locating the cheesery on the Waterkloof Wine Estate was the ideal fit as cheese and wine pair so perfectly, and so the vision was for a deli that would combine these in a beautiful natural setting alongside the cheesery. Sitting overlooking the beautiful vista of False Bay, Healey’s Cheese is in a simple, contemporary farmhouse. Inside, the cheese deli looks directly into the cheese-making factory and maturing room through large back windows. Wooden shelves of cheeses are illuminated softly giving the display a glowing, ethereal quality for customers to experience while tasting and shopping for cheese and wine. The design concept centres around large oversized spruce timber used to echo the large cheese wheels in scale and colour. The main deli counter stacks the warm yellow [...]

We caught up with Leon Roodt, Owner and Creative Director of Ergoform, an award-winning enterprise and one the most progressive manufacturers of office furniture in the country. Ergoform has been designing and manufacturing premium quality, functional-yet-beautiful pieces of furniture since 1994. With showrooms in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban, as well as a fully equipped manufacturing premises in the Western Cape, the company’s success is due to owners Leon and Alice Roodt’s ability to understand the needs of the modern professional and to adapt to an ever-changing landscape, where office furniture and office interior design have become an essential part of what organisations have to rely on to optimise employee performance. Tell us how your business began, and what prompted the idea? After studying business at the University of Stellenbosch, I began working as a management and training consultant. I sat at my desk one day and thought surely it can’t be too difficult to manufacture the designs that I’d always dreamt of. Wanting to have my own business for a long time, at the end of that month I decided to resign and start up on my own. How did you come up with the name Ergoform? The name Ergoform combines ergonomics [...]
