As the demand for more naturally produced wines – that taste just as good – rises, Spier’s new Organic Harvest: a Garden-to-Glass tasting at Spier proves that regenerative farming is a win-wine situation. Spier has launched a new tasting experience, the Organic Harvest: a Garden-to-Glass Tasting. The new tasting combines award-winning organic wines with vegetarian bites made using fresh ingredients straight from the Spier Food Garden. Certified organic wine is made with grapes grown without the use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides, or other artificial chemicals. At present, all vines on Spier’s own farm are organic. This way of farming nurtures the vineyard as a living ecological system and allows for grapes full of incredible flavour and complexity. Spier’s Organic Winemaker, Tania Kleintjes, explains, “The big difference with organic wine is in the vineyard – not the taste.” As a complement to their organic wine initiatives, this unique tasting is paired with fresh produce from the farm garden. The Spier Food Garden has been transformed from an old horse paddock into a thriving horticultural hotspot to grow delicious and nutrient-rich produce using eco-friendly and regenerative techniques. The new tasting features four delicious organic wines, including Good Natured Sauvignon Blanc, Farm House [...]

One of the world’s most consistently awarded luxury wine estates, De Toren Private Cellar, is now available to the world through virtual tours. Thanks to new forms of digital content, the globe top’s cultural institutions and luxury brands – the likes of the renowned Tate in London or Milan’s stylish Fondazione Prada – are now more accessible than ever before. Our society’s marked shift towards virtual engagement has opened up similar possibilities for the South African wine industry to broaden its global audience via live streaming content, webinars, e-tours and so on. In particular, one of Stellenbosch’s most consistently awarded wine estates, De Toren, producer of limited-edition luxury wines such as the opulent Book XVII (the 2018 vintage has just been released), the iconic De Toren Fusion V, and other collectible wines, has eagerly embraced digital means to connect with its ardent fans. Wine connoisseurs, critics, collectors and an appreciative audience at large can now embark on more extensive digital explorations of De Toren. De Toren has introduced new and engaging virtual tasting experiences, tours and sessions with the winemakers, which make this private cellar available to lovers of the vine anywhere in the world. Even when COVID-19 lockdown restrictions [...]

Spier, the historic Stellenbosch wine farm, has won Gold in the Responsible Business category at the 2020 Inspirational Africa Responsible Tourism Awards, it was revealed by WTM Africa in early April. The awards evaluated previous winners in the WTM Africa Responsible Tourism Awards and those for Africa who won Gold in the World Responsible Tourism Awards at WTM London over the last five years (2015-2019) to identify the best of the best. For the Responsible Business category, the judges looked for businesses operating in Africa which have taken responsibility to make tourism better across their business. Spier, which won Gold in the Accommodation for Responsible Employment category in the Africa Awards in 2016, was awarded Gold again at the Inspirational Africa Responsible Tourism Awards in recognition of the farm’s “transparent reporting and the breadth of their approach to improving the employment conditions of their staff”. In particular, the judges recognised Growing for Good, a range of initiatives that Spier supports, empowering communities to make positive social and environmental change. Among the Spier Growing for Good initiatives the judges highlighted are: Learning Spend: each employee receives money to spend on their personal development. The stipend can be spent on anything that [...]

Following the success of the inaugural Spier Light Art Festival, the historic Stellenbosch wine farm will present a second edition from 6 December 2019 to 19 January 2020. The first edition of the festival took place over Dec 2018 / Jan 2019, lighting Spier up with an array of artworks incorporating light and sound. More than 10 000 people viewed the 18 artworks, ranging from interactive installations to pieces that invited the visitor to pause and reflect. “Light art installations are intractable and mercurial by nature. Transcending the confines of their materiality, light art works are also defined by what they illuminate or hide” reflect the festival’s curators, Jay Pather and Vaughn Sadie. “These experiences – of walking and pausing, catching a glimpse or settling down to absorb – invited introspection, adventure and playfulness. Scattered across the Spier estate, each work offered an opportunity to experience the complex, multi-hued, multi-faceted texture of our environment and ourselves.” The Sunday Times Neighbourhood supplement wrote about the previous Spier Light Art Festival: “Far from your average colourful and flashing Christmas light show, the Spier Light Art Fest is an emotional and even physical affair, but always amazes… you won’t be disappointed.” Call for [...]

Spier received silver at the African Responsible Tourism Awards 2018 in the category of Decent Work and Inclusion at World Travel Market Africa in Cape Town last night. Companies making up the strong longlist were scrutinised by judges on the lookout for a meaningful engagement with economically poor, socially excluded and marginalised local people through employment opportunities and community interventions. The nominees were expected to go above and beyond the legal requirements in relation to wages, working conditions and skills development and be working with local producers to facilitate and grow their participation in the supply chain. The award recognises that not only does Spier’s entry-level wages far exceed the industry-regulated minimum wages – we also have a comprehensive array of initiatives to tackle youth employment and enhance the wellbeing, skills and development of our staff. These include: Pinotage Youth Development Academy: Practical work experience is provided at Spier in various aspects of the business in this programme, which seeks to educate and employ disadvantaged youth in the wine industry. Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator: We recruit entry-level staff through Harambee, an initiative which sources, trains and places unemployed young people from disadvantaged backgrounds into their first jobs. Training: This year [...]

The La Capra Goat Run, an annual favourite from Fairview, takes place this year on Saturday 15 October 2016. This trail run begins and ends at the renowned Fairview Wine Farm in Paarl and is held in aid of numerous charities, including Drakenstein Hospice, Boland Autism, Sunfield Home, Wellington Lions Club, Paarl Mountain Reserve, and The Sunflower Fund. Trail runners can expect a real treat of a route, climbing out from vineyards onto the fynbos slopes and upper areas of the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve. For the more fun-minded, family-oriented groups, there’s also a short Fun Walk that’s free for kiddies. The event caters for all levels of trail runners. There are the entry level 5km and 8km routes, and for the more adventurous ‘goat runners’, the challenging 15km and 28km ‘extreme’ options, which include summiting the striking Paarl Rock, the second largest granite outcrop in the world (after Uluru in Australia). Ascending the ‘Pearl’ is a memorable experience, as you feel so small, trickling over its vast slope. The panoramic view from the top is astounding, with Table Mountain and the sea in the West and the Boland Mountains in the East. The diversity in the ‘extreme’ [...]

When the Bouma family wanted to reinvent the existing restaurant on their wine farm Anura, they enlisted the help of Creative Director Aidan Hart of Inhouse Brand Architects and his wife Brenda Hart of 89 Interior Design to bring their vision to life. What was previously a more formal and traditional restaurant, Wagon Trail Brewery, has been transformed into a directional and contemporary destination that houses a new 500litre microbrewery. In addition to the brewery and brewer’s laboratory in full view of visitors, an on-site deli is near to completion and will make Anura’s own wines and cheeses available alongside a selection of fine cuts of meat from 12 Pigs charcuterie. The brewery itself features a variety of lagers and ales brewed by Lance Bouma. “I always wanted to try brewing beer and after seeing the craft beer equipment at a show overseas, I took the plunge and ordered it,” he explains. “There was a lot of brainstorming about where to put the brewery and how to sell the beer,” he continues. “We then had the idea of closing our original restaurant, and starting afresh – with the brewery, wines, cheeses and charcuterie being the focal point of the restaurant.
