How SA’s design Garde keeps the country mesmerised
The fertile hotbed that is South African design just keeps it coming! From astonishing new collabs to fresh drops from influential players, here’s a quick guide to what’s new and now in the wonderful world of local creativity.
Dear Ribane rides again
Prepare to have your mind altered. The multi-disciplinary family creative collective that sets tongues wagging, brains boggling and hearts blazing all the way from Morocco to Geneva to Dubai, is at it again. Expect more music, performance, creative direction, new-wave theatre and general #wtf-ness that is beyond wow… Dear Ribane will present its newly hatched singularity at 100% Design South Africa from 1 to 4 August 2024 at the Sandton Convention Centre.
The three Ribane siblings will be creating a futuristic home, complete with a new furniture collection, a new self-care range and stellar collabs with their longstanding collaborators G-Star Raw Clothing and Pantheon Audio. This ‘breathable installation’ will change daily to ‘create a new excitement in the space for each day of the show,’ says Manthe Ribane. ‘Who knows, you might even spot some Dear Ribane aliens living in this space…
‘It feels right to do this now!’ continues the multidisciplinary creative who recently won an award in collaboration with Pantheon Audio, at Design Shanghai in June 2024.
Don’t miss the Dear Ribane trio’s progressive new project here on our shores!
No Paine, no Gain
Johannesburg-based studio Joe Paine, named for its designer/founder, has always been known for inventiveness combined with sophistication. It cleverly released must-haves like planters before we even knew how much we’d love them! With foresight in their pocket, the studio is now launching an off-shoot brand, Ridge Forrester, and based on its track record and design nous, you can pretty much bet on it going big.
‘Ridge Forrester is a new brand of picnic, camping and overlanding furniture and products that break the established sensibilities around function and aesthetics. Lightweight and compact with built-in functional elements to help the camper, overlander, lodge game drive, and the park/beach picnic goer more enjoy the process of entertaining and preparation in the outdoors and wilderness,’ says Paine.
Ridge Forrester’s style safari will be launched exclusively at 100% Design South Africa.
K+K = OK!
Durban-based Kalki Ceramics, previous winner of the Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) talent search, will collaborate with Kiln House Design Studio on a new ‘feat’ of clay. When two bespoke, handmade tile houses put their minds together, the results are sure to captivate. Catch this cool collab at 100% Design Africa.
Oh BOYDE!
Fast gaining fame in the world of sustainable men’s fashion, BOYDE was founded in Johannesburg by multidisciplinary designer Samkelo Boyde Xaba. The brand has a bent for creating wardrobe ware for the architecturally-inclined.
‘BOYDE takes inspiration from diverse sources, including geometric modernism structures, modern industrial architecture, and the elegance of day-to-day minimalism,’ says Xaba. ‘Rooted in the brand’s identity is a profound appreciation for African historical architecture and Afrocultural heritage.’
Expect to see one of its suits at a site meeting any time soon, and pick up yours at their pop-up at 100% Design South Africa.
