Known as one of the foremost proponents of South African design as a category brand, Clout/SA is at it again! This time, the progressive team is propelling the local industry forward yet again with the release of a new bespoke, collectible publication. It’s their first to be made available for sale to the broader public after they distributed a gorgeously curated coffee table book to a select few in 2019, and following their inaugural edition in 2018, which introduced Southern African designer-makers to Nando’s restaurants across the globe.

The brand-new print publication will be launched at the Clout/SA display stand at 100% Design Africa 2022, which is co-located with Decorex Joburg 2022 and forms part of the larger Decorex Africa portfolio. 100% Design Africa is renowned as the country’s leading showcase for local product design and it spans a stand-alone hall at the Sandton Convention Centre.

“The magazine is a wonderful extension of our showcase and it covers many of our designers and our recent projects,” explains Clout/SA creative director Tracy Lynch. “What better place to launch our latest print edition, which proudly covers new designs by local talent, than at the country’s foremost product design event?” she continues. The collectible publication will be available directly to the public at a cost of R50 per copy.

This keepsake title is emblazoned with custom patterns created by Zinhle Sithebe, who was a Top 10 Finalist in the Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) talent search in 2018. Her bold designs take pride of place on the front and back cover. Sithebe is also making limited-edition prints of these distinctive patterns available for sale at the show.

In addition to the new publication, the Clout/SA stand will feature recent and brand-new furniture pieces and designs conceptualised by young creatives who have all participated in HYD over the years. Names include Spamandla Mdunyelwa (2018 Finalist), the aforementioned Sithebe, Sipho Twala (2020 Finalist), and Siviwe Jali (2020 Finalist).

Jali was recently named Best New Talent at the Decorex Cape Town awards which took place in June 2022. Mdunyelwa has collaborated with award-winning Joburg-based design studio, TheUrbanative to produce two pieces, a table and a stool, and these will both be on show on the Clout/SA stand, displaying her vibrant, brightly coloured surface patterns to great effect.

The new Clout/SA products launching at the show include a light by Christian Botha, a HYD Finalist in 2020, and an all-new, free-standing floor mirror by Thando Nxelelwa, who was also a Finalist in 2020. Clout/SA has supported Nxelelwa on his journey and has been working closely with him on the development of his mirror by sharing design direction and support with the prototyping process. “It’s looking very exciting!” says Lynch. “It’s an unusual piece that will most certainly attract attention. Come and see it at the show – Thando will also be on the stand, so come and met him, too!”

Once the show – which runs from 28-31 July 2022 – has concluded, the new Clout/SA publication will be made available in 20 of the top Nando’s restaurants for customers to read whilst eating their favourite Nando’s meal. The aim is to enhance the in-house dining experience, so that patrons can learn more about the spectacular designs that furnish the restaurants. “Anyone coming to Nando’s can pick it up and read it whilst enjoying their peri peri chicken!” enthuses Lynch.
