Historic night for Spier as it breaks the record for most Double Gold Medals won by a wine producer at Veritas Wine Awards
Spier Wine Farm received nine Double Gold medals and seven Gold medals at the 29th annual Veritas Wine Awards gala dinner in Cape Town. Known as the South Africa’s most trusted competition, Spier’s golden results is the most ever awarded to a wine producer since the prestigious competition began in 1991.
Seven of Spier’s nine Double Gold winners were white wines: Spier Brut Methodé Cap Classique 2009, two Chenin Blancs (Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2018 and Spier Ideology Chenin Blanc 2019), two Sauvignon Blancs (Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc 2019 and Spier Ideology Sauvignon Blanc 2019), and both the 2013 and 2019 vintages of Spier Creative Block 2 (a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon). The two red wine winners were the Spier 21 Gables Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 and Spier Creative Block 3 2016 (a blend of Shiraz, Mourvèdre and Viognier).
“We are absolutely delighted with these results as they recognise our team’s passionate commitment to crafting quality wines,” says Spier Cellar Master Frans Smit. “The success of our white wines in particular – across varietals and, indeed, vintages – shows a depth, versatility and consistency that we’ve worked really hard to achieve.”
This year Veritas’s authoritative jury, including five distinguished international and 95 local specialists, judged close to 1500 entries during a five-day blind tasting session.

A Top 10 Sauvignon Blanc
The Veritas victory comes soon after Spier Ideology Sauvignon Blanc 2019 was included in the prestigious FNB Sauvignon Blanc Top 10. To identify the best 10 wines, the judging panel of experts tasted 183 wines from the 107 producers that submitted entries.
“We are thrilled that a Sauvignon Blanc from this year’s vintage is already receiving acclaim,” Spier Cellar Frans Smit says. “In spite of prolonged drought having made growing conditions difficult in recent years, the vineyards we pick grapes from have shown that, if carefully tended, they can continue to produce grapes of excellent quality and complex character. This is evident even when the wine has been recently released.”
