South Africa’s Most Supportive Art and Design Competition Hosts Pop-Up Exhibition at Artec, Port Elizabeth!
The PPC Imaginarium Awards has teamed up with the artEC Community Art Centre in Port Elizabeth to host a pop-up exhibition showcasing artworks from the Eastern Cape’s emerging creatives. The exhibition is open to the public and will run until 10 February 2017. The show features a range of artworks that have been entered into the annual awards competition.
A project of the innovation department of PPC Ltd, The PPC Imaginarium Awards is an art and design competition in which emerging artists and designers are challenged to demonstrate their knack for innovation by seamlessly incorporating the medium of concrete into each of their respective disciplines.
As part of its ethos, artEC pledges to ensure that its annual exhibition calendar includes a selection of open exhibitions in an effort to continue providing opportunities for unestablished artists to exhibit. This policy aligns with The PPC Imaginarium Awards’ vision of promoting and establishing young artists and designers as leaders in their fields.
Now in its third year, the BASA award-winning competition has firmly established itself as the country’s leading career-launching platform for up-and-coming artists. With prize money totaling R500 000, the competition offers not only an enticing cash incentive but mentorship and ample publicity, too. Moreover, it awards finalists with the coveted opportunity of exhibiting their works at a number of auspicious galleries and major events – such as the Turbine Art Fair and 100% Design South Africa – as part of its annual travelling exhibition.
The exhibition in Port Elizabeth is a first for the competition. Says PPC’s Daniel van der Merwe, who heads the PPC Imaginarium Awards: “It is important to us that the competition has national representation, which is why we have judging stations in Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria. Expanding our exhibition calendar to include Port Elizabeth is exciting for us and we hope to continue to support and grow the creative industries in the Eastern Cape in the future!”
With the PPC Imaginarium Awards serving as both a platform for emerging talent to be recognised and rewarded, and as a celebration of the beauty and versatility of concrete, the exhibition at artEC will provide a taste of the exceptional talent that has come to be expected of the competition, and is not to be missed!
