100% Design South Africa 2017 Retains Its Position As Africa’s Leading Product Design Showcase
South Africa’s leading product design showcase, 100% Design South Africa, took place alongside Decorex Joburg from 9-13 August 2017. Thousands of members of the public and the interior design trade attended the fourth annual event, which was located in Hall 1 at the Gallagher Convention Centre. Visitors were treated to stimulating and inspiring displays from over 130 local and international exhibitors, representing the best of the best in furniture design, textiles, lighting, wallpaper and product design.
In addition to a host of exhibition stands, on show were special feature displays curated by 100% Design South Africa Programme Director Cathy O’Clery of Platform Creative Agency. These included the province’s up-and-coming designers on the Young Gauteng stand, and brand new industrial and furniture pieces by Jozi’s top professionals on We are Joburg, both presented by the Gauteng Tourism Authority.
Other standout displays included a Light Tank, created by interactive designer, Goddy Roodt, which comprised 25 000 LED lights that were programmed with different visual effects set to original music composed for the show. There was a large Stuttaford Van Lines removal truck impressively kitted out as a pop-up exhibition for the PPC Imaginarium, the country’s most supportive art and design competition.
Surfacing company Caesarstone collaborated with three influential South African designers to incorporate Caesarstone into furniture concepts. Several new pieces by Dokter and Misses, Chris and Anna Weylandt of Weylandts, and Gregor Jenkin were officially launched on the Caesarstone Concepts stand.
Also of note was the concept stand, the “Afrotel”, Source Interior Brand Architects’s interpretation of the annual 100% Hotel exhibition. Source IBA put together their vision of a contemporary African hotel, exploring the typologies, textures and material technologies that typify our continent. The Afrotel won the Best Stand Award at the show.
