Five-star Distinction for Spier’s Prestige Cuvée by Platter’s 2025

Spier celebrates coveted five-star rating in South Africa’s definitive wine guide

One of South Africa’s oldest and most loved working wine farms has achieved a remarkable distinction in the 45th edition of Platter’s Wine Guide. Spier has earned the coveted five-star rating for its Prestige Cuvée Cap Classique 2016 representing excellence in Cap Classique.

Besides this prestigious rating, the following Spier wines also received these top-honours:

  • Creative Block 2 2024 – 4.5 stars
  • Creative Block 3 2021 – 4.5 stars
  • Creative Block 5 2021 – 4.5 stars
  • Farmer Angus Organic Red 2018 – 4.5 stars

The Platter’s Guide, South Africa’s most comprehensive wine companion since 1980, is considered the benchmark for excellence in the local industry. Its rigorous tasting process, combining sighted and blind evaluations, makes these ratings particularly meaningful in the guide’s assessment of over 8,000 wines.

“This recognition feels especially noteworthy for our Prestige Cuvée,” says Cellar Master Johan Jordaan. “It’s a bottle-fermented sparkling wine that is really about embodies patience – crafted only in exceptional vintages and given time to develop its full character over eight years. To see it shine alongside our Creative Block 2, 3 and 5 and Farmer Angus Organic Red validates our commitment to both innovation and tradition.”

The Prestige Cuvée 2016 represents the pinnacle of Spier’s sparkling wine craftmanship: a refined blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Elgin’s cool climate vineyards, where Atlantic breezes and high-altitude conditions create ideal growing conditions for sparkling wine grapes. The wine spent no less than 84 months maturing on the lees, resulting in remarkable finesse – golden-hued with precise bubbles and offering layers of Golden Delicious apple, citrus and freshly baked brioche notes.

These accolades reflect more than just winemaking excellence. Since 1993, when the Enthoven family first took stewardship of this historic farm, Spier’s regenerative focus has been unstinting, crafting wines that honour both the land and its people. Each bottle tells this story in its own way – the Prestige Cuvée through time and patience, Creative Block through artistic collaboration and craft and Farmer Angus Organic through its passion for good soil.

“While recognition is always welcome, what matters most is that these wines talk to our philosophy and sense of place” adds Jordaan. “They represent the dedication of our vineyard and cellar teams, the quality of our fruit, and most importantly, the trust of people who choose to share them at their table. White wines account for the majority of our cellar’s craft, so it is especially gratifying to be raising our glass celebrating our love and devotion to organic wines, red wines and bubbles!”
